The police encounter case of Prabhash Mandal, the main accused in the heinous schoolgirl rape and murder case in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has taken a new and extremely sensitive turn. The command of this alleged encounter which took place in the marshy area of Surjapur on Tuesday midnight has now been handed over to the state’s top investigating agency CID. Judicial investigation has already been initiated in this matter under human rights guidelines and legal procedures. Now the CID team has reached ground zero and is busy investigating the authenticity of this entire encounter through forensic mapping and ballistic evidence.
Sensational revelation from post mortem report: Both bullets were fired from very close distance from the back.
Prabhash Mandal’s post mortem report received from police and forensic sources has made the entire picture of this encounter clear. According to initial findings of doctors, Prabhash was shot twice at close range while trying to escape. Both these bullets entered his body from the back and passed through the front. Doctors did not find any bullet or metal piece stuck inside the body of the accused. According to the medical report, one bullet completely pierced Prabhash’s right lung, while the other bullet passed through his body, severely damaging his right kidney, resulting in his death on the spot.

Baruipur police administration has clarified its position on the questions being raised by the opposition and human rights activists regarding taking the accused to the incident site at night. Police officials say that they could not have taken the risk of taking Prabhash to that sensitive area of Surjapur in broad daylight. There was a huge anger among the local people over the murder of an innocent 12 year old girl and there was a huge danger of law and order being disturbed or the accused being mob lynched by the angry mob. Since this heinous crime was also committed in the thick of the night, the investigation team took the accused there at around 12:45 am to accurately understand his actual movements and escape routes.

According to the incident, when Ronnie Sarkar, in-charge of Canning Police Circle, was standing very close to the accused at the spot of the incident, Prabhash snatched the service revolver from his waist with lightning speed and started running towards the marshy path while firing. He also fired one round at the police team. After this, to save the lives of himself and his fellow policemen, Sub-Inspector Arghya Mandal, PC in-charge of Baruipur police station, retaliated with his revolver. A senior CID official said their main objective was to establish whether the police’s retaliatory action was indeed warranted within the scope of self-defence. All the six policemen involved in this operation will have to appear before the CID team and record their official statement, although no policeman has been suspended yet.
Ballistic investigation started and fourth accused Kabir Mollah on police remand till July 20
The forensic and detective wing of CID visited the marshy ground where the encounter took place in Surjapur on Thursday morning and completed 3-D mapping of the entire scene. Empty shells, service weapons of policemen and ballistic evidence recovered from the spot have been sent to the testing laboratory. On the other hand, the police, showing promptness, presented Kabir Mollah, the fourth wanted accused in this heinous gang rape case, in the local court of Baruipur. Special Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee presented irrefutable arguments in the court and proved that Kabir Mollah was an equal partner in this heinous act like Anand Sardar and Diwakar Sardar. Considering the seriousness of the crime, the court has sent Kabir Mollah to police custody till July 20, 2026.
