Araria, 06 July (HS). Araria District and Session Judge Court on Saturday sentenced two culprits to life imprisonment in the case of murder of a married woman over dowry five years ago.
Along with this, the court also imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000 on both the accused. In its verdict, the court has ordered the accused to undergo an additional punishment of three months if they fail to pay the fine.
The court pronounced this sentence in Session Case No. 56/2020 to the main accused in the case, the deceased's husband and father-in-law. Those who were convicted and sentenced include the husband Rajesh Mandal, father – Sadanand Mandal, and the deceased's father-in-law Sadanand Mandal, father – Jhangar Mandal, a resident of Bareta, Kasba of Purnia district.
The case is about the death of Chandni Devi within a month of her marriage due to dowry. Panchayat was also held several times in this case, but no solution could be found. The investigation against another accused in the case, Mithilesh Mandal, has been kept pending by the investigating officer of the case.
The deceased's father Om Prakash Mandal alias Sukhanu Mandal, a resident of Dimhariya Sahasmal of Tarabari police station area, had registered this case in Araria police station. In his statement, he had said that on 20 July 2019, his sister-in-law and sister-in-law used to rebuke him for dowry and her husband also supported them in this act. The deceased's husband used to send her to her maternal home for this reason. A panchayat was also held at the social level regarding this.
While hearing on the point of punishment, senior advocate Krishna Mohan Singh pleaded for the minimum punishment for the culprits. While on behalf of the government, public prosecutor Laxmi Narayan Yadav argued for the maximum punishment. After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the court acquitted the culprits.
