A very important hearing is going to be held in the Madhya Pradesh High Court today (27 May) in the Twisha Sharma death case. This hearing is regarding the cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to the deceased’s mother-in-law and retired judge Giribala Singh. Actually, Bhopal District Court had granted anticipatory bail to Giribala Singh, which has been strongly challenged by the state government and Twisha’s father in the High Court.
Earlier on Monday, both these petitions were heard together in a single bench of Justice Devnarayan Mishra. During that time, Giribala Singh’s lawyer had sought some time from the court to file his official reply, after which the High Court had fixed the next date of the case today i.e. May 27. A heated debate is expected between the two sides in this matter this afternoon.
Former judge mother-in-law faces serious allegations of using influence
Twisha Sharma’s family and the government lawyer have strongly opposed the anticipatory bail of Giribala Singh in this high-profile case. Giribala Singh himself is a former judge and is accused of misusing his position and social influence to try to save his son Samarth Singh.
During the investigation, it has come to light that immediately after the incident, he had made calls to about 46 influential and VIP people, which is being seen as an attempt to influence the police investigation. Apart from this, he has also been seriously accused of trying to tamper with the CCTV footage of his house. The state government has argued in the High Court that Giribala Singh has held a high position in the law in the past, but at present she is not cooperating at all in the investigation, hence the anticipatory bail granted to her should be canceled immediately.
Son on police remand, Supreme Court has imposed ‘media ban’
On the other hand, the troubles of Samarth Sharma, the main accused in this case and Twisha’s husband, are increasing continuously. Samarth had earlier withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea from the High Court and surrendered before the Jabalpur district court last Friday. After this, Jabalpur police detained him and handed him over to Bhopal police. Bhopal Police on Saturday produced Samarth in the court and took him on police remand for seven days, where he is being interrogated intensively in a closed room.
The Supreme Court has also taken a tough stance on this entire sensitive matter. The apex court has issued a strict direction saying that no person associated with this case—be it the accused party, the victim’s family or the police officer involved in the investigation—will come before the media and make any statement, so that the investigation can be completed completely impartially and without any pressure. Today all eyes are on the High Court’s decision whether a former judge will have to go to jail or his bail will remain intact.
