According to Hindu tradition, Mahashivratri is considered the most sacred festival of Hindus. During this period, worship of Lord Shiva has special significance. Devotees of Mahadev worship him with full rituals during Mahashivratri. It is believed that consecrating Shivalinga on Mahashivratri is very auspicious. Those who worship Bholenath on this day, their wishes are fulfilled.

Religious significance of Mahashivratri:

According to Hindu religious beliefs, Mahashivratri is dedicated to Lord Mahadev. This festival falls on the Chaturdashi tithi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month and this year it is celebrated on 8th March. According to mythology, the day of Mahashivratri is considered to be the most auspicious for performing rituals to please Lord Shiva. It is believed that the benefits of worshiping Lord Shiva on this day are unique and the whole year's devotion is rewarded on the day of Mahashivratri.

Importance of Mahashivratri fast:

According to ancient tradition, if someone is facing problems in his marriage then fasting on Mahashivratri can be very beneficial for him. It is believed that by observing this fast, all the problems related to marriage go away and everything starts going well. Also, if there is financial crisis at home, then worshiping Lord Shiva with Shammi leaves on the day of Mahashivratri can provide relief from financial crisis.

Mahashivratri puja method:

  • Devotees observing fast on Mahashivratri should chant the Shiva mantra (Om Namah Shivay) throughout the day and eat fruits during the day, followed by worship at night.
  • For night puja, devotees can perform complete rituals by offering fruits, flowers, sandalwood, Bilva leaves, Dhatura, incense and lamps to Shivalinga.
  • During Mahashivratri, the Shivalinga should be bathed with Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar) and devotees should chant the Shiva Panchakshari Mantra.
  • Devotees can offer flowers with the names of Lord Shiva – Bhava, Sharva, Rudra, Pashupati, Ugra, Mahan, Bhima and Ishaan. Then they can perform aarti and circumambulate the Shivalinga.
  • According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva should be worshiped in all four hours (four hours of the night). During these Prahars, devotees should chant Shiva Panchakshari Mantra.
  • Rudraksha rosary should be worn in the morning after bathing and while wearing Rudraksha rosary one should sit facing east or north. Then devotees can chant Shiva mantra.
