Ranchi, September 19 (HS). Jharkhand High Court on Thursday gave its verdict on the criminal appeal against the death sentence of Pawan Kumar Singh, who was sentenced to death in the case of shooting three members of a family and injuring two people on the night of 17 August 2019 by entering Barkakana Railway Colony of Ramgarh district and killing them. The division bench of the High Court rejected the appeal against the death sentence of Pawan Kumar Singh. Along with this, the division bench changed the death sentence given to him by the lower court of Ramgarh to 25 years of imprisonment. The division bench also rejected the petition filed by the government to confirm the death sentence of Pawan Kumar Singh.
Dismissed CRPF jawan Pawan Kumar Singh was sentenced by the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge of Ramgarh on 16 March 2023. The court had sentenced Pawan to death under section 302. Along with this, a fine of Rs 10,000 each was also imposed under both the sections along with 10 years imprisonment under section 307 and seven years imprisonment under the Arms Act. Apart from former DSP Sanjeev Kumar Besra and a doctor from Medanta, all 16 witnesses had testified in the case.
According to the case, Pawan used to come to the house of railway employee Ashok Ram to get milk every day. On the night of 17 August 2019, at around 9 pm, he went to Ashok Ram's house to get milk. After a dispute, he shot five members of the family including Ashok Ram. Ashok Ram and his wife Leela Devi and their pregnant daughter Varsha Devi alias Meena Devi died due to bullet injuries, while daughter Suman Devi and son Sanjay Ram were seriously injured. After carrying out the incident, he went to the RPF barracks. He left the government pistol used in the murder in the barracks and fled. The police had recovered the weapon used in the incident. He was absconding since the incident. On 21 March 2020, the police arrested him from Tarari police station area of Bhojpur district of Bihar.
