Kolkata, 23 October (Hindustan Reporter). The ruling Trinamool Congress is in a strong position in the by-election to be held on November 13 on Sitai assembly seat of West Bengal. This seat was won by Trinamool in the 2021 assembly elections and this year it also won the Cooch Behar seat in the Lok Sabha elections.

After sitting Trinamool MLA Jagdish Chandra Barma won the election from Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat of Basunia, the by-election is being held in Sitai. The party has fielded Basunia's wife, Sangeeta Roy, from the seat, who is hoping to win on the strength of her husband's popularity and the party's strong organisation.

His main rival is BJP's Deepak Kumar Roy, a local leader. Due to non-formation of Congress-Left alliance, this time All India Forward Bloc and Congress, included in the left parties, have fielded their respective candidates. Arun Kumar Burma is contesting from Forward Bloc and Harihar Roy Sinha from Congress.

Political analysts believe that Trinamool Congress may benefit from the division of opposition votes into three parts. However, there is some public anger against the state government and Trinamool, which R.G. The tax has emerged due to the murder and rape of a junior doctor of a medical college and hospital.

The record for Trinamool Congress on Sitai seat has not been very impressive. In 2021, Basunia was the first Trinamool candidate to win from here by a margin of more than 10 thousand votes. The seat was dominated by the Congress from 1967 to 1977, when Mohammad Fazal Haq won it four times.

After the formation of the Left Front government in 1977, this seat was held by the Forward Bloc till 2006. Congress won this seat three consecutive times in 2006, 2011 and 2016. In 2021, Trinamool won here for the first time. Sitai seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste and about three lakh voters here are mainly dependent on agriculture.
