The Government of India has started a campaign to hoist the tricolour at every house before 15 August. In the last 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the people to upload their selfies with the tricolour on 'hargarhtiranga.com'.

But there are rules and regulations regarding the use and display of the national flag. There is a provision for punishment for violating them.

On Independence Day, people often put the tricolor on their bike or car. But not everyone is allowed to do so. According to the Indian Flag Code, 2002, only a few people have the legal right to hoist the tricolor on their vehicles.

What is the punishment for breaking the rules?

Citizens have the freedom to hoist the tricolor at home or carry the flag in their hands. But putting a flag on private vehicles is a legal offense. If someone is found guilty in this, action can be taken against him under the National Honor to Insults Act, 1971. According to this, a person can be punished with imprisonment up to 3 years or fine or both for insulting the national symbols of India such as the national flag, the Constitution and the national anthem.
