The importance of Amarnath Yatra increases significantly in the month of Sawan. In this month devotees go on a journey to have darshan of Baba Barfani. The ice linga of Lord Shiva is naturally formed in the Amarnath cave, situated at an altitude of 3800 meters above sea level. Therefore it is known as Baba Barfani.

How long does the Amarnath Yatra last?

The Amarnath Yatra for this year is scheduled to begin on June 29 and end on August 19. Due to election reasons, the duration of the pilgrimage has been reduced to 45 days instead of the usual two months. Registration for the yatra will start from April 15.

It is believed that this pilgrimage provides spiritual benefits, with true darshan of the holy cave of Baba Barfani leading to salvation for the devotees. It is said that a pilgrimage to this holy place is equal to the merit gained from visiting 23 other holy places. According to the scriptures, the virtue obtained by worshiping Shiva Linga here is more than the virtue obtained by visiting Kashi, Prayag and Naimisharanya.

Legend has it that Lord Shiva told the secret of immortality to Goddess Parvati in this cave, but she fell asleep midway. Every year an ice Shivalinga is naturally formed in the holy Amarnath cave, where worship takes place. It is believed that by worshiping Baba Amarnath, all the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled and their troubles go away.

The unique feature of the Shivalinga in the Amarnath cave is its self-made nature, it is believed that it changes shape with the phases of the moon. Made of solid ice, the Shivalinga in the cave appears in the form of stalagmites. Every year devotees from all over the world come on Amarnath Yatra to have darshan of this miraculous Lingam amidst tight security arrangements.
