Train Ticket Transfer Rules: Can a confirmed train ticket be transferred in the name of another person? Know railway rules, time limit and complete offline process

It often happens that we book a confirmed ticket of Indian Railways for some family function, festival or holiday months in advance, but as the date of journey approaches, our journey suddenly gets postponed due to some important work, illness or emergency. In such a situation, most of the passengers think only about the option of canceling the ticket, which not only cuts the heavy cancellation charge but also makes it impossible for any other family member to get a confirmed seat at the last moment. But very few people are aware that under the current rules of Indian Railways, their confirmed train ticket can be officially transferred to the name of another person. For this, Railways has set very clear, transparent and valid guidelines.

However, this rule of Railways does not allow any unknown person or ticket brokers to sell tickets. This facility is applicable only for family members with blood relations, government employees and special mass events. If you apply at the station within the time limit prescribed by the Railways, your family members can legally travel on the same PNR and seat without any ticket cancellation charge.

As per the commercial rules of Indian Railways, the ticket cannot be transferred to any third or unrelated third party. To prevent black marketing and brokerage of tickets, Railways has kept the scope of transfer very limited and safe.

As per Railway Board rules, you can transfer your confirmed ticket only to the following members of your family:

  • Mother or Father

  • Brother or Sister

  • Husband or Wife

  • Son or Daughter

Apart from this, there is no legal permission to transfer tickets in the name of friends, colleagues, distant relatives (like uncles, maternal uncles, aunts) or neighbours.

Apart from family members, Railways has also fixed the eligibility for ticket transfer for some special categories of passengers:

  1. Government Employees: If a Government servant is unable to travel due to his official duty, he can get the ticket transferred to any other colleague in his own department by giving a letter from the competent authority 24 hours before the departure of the train.

  2. Students of recognized educational institution: If a group of students from a recognized school or college is travelling, the name of one student can be substituted for another student on a written request made by the Principal or Head of the institution 48 hours before the departure of the train.

  3. Wedding procession or group booking: In case of group booking for a marriage party or cultural group, the names of the members can be changed on the application of the wedding organiser, 48 hours before departure.

  4. NCC Cadets: The group of cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) also has the facility to change the name 24 hours in advance with the approval of the authorized officer.

Railways has set a strict time limit for transferring tickets. If you apply after the prescribed deadline has passed, your request will be rejected:

  • For family members: At least before the scheduled departure time of the train (before chart preparation) 24 hours ago It is mandatory to apply.

  • For a wedding or group party: at least before train departure 48 hours ago.

  • For Government Service and NCC: at least before train departure 24 hours ago.

Keep in mind that this facility of changing name on one ticket is available only during the lifetime. Only Once Only this is given. Once transferred, it cannot be changed again in the name of any other person.

Before going to the railway counter to transfer the ticket, you will have to keep the following documents ready:

  • Printout of original confirmed ticket (if e-ticket) or original counter ticket (Window Ticket).

  • Identity card of the original passenger (in whose name the ticket currently stands).

  • Valid government identity proof (Aadhar Card, Voter ID, or Passport) of the new passenger (in whose name the ticket is to be issued).

  • Proof of Relation: Document proving family relationship between the two—like ration card, copy of family register, marriage certificate, passport, or same name of father/husband in Aadhaar card of both.

  • Written application letter addressed to the Station Master or Chief Reservation Supervisor (CRS), containing concrete reasons for not being able to travel and details of the new passenger.

The ticket transfer process is completely offline; This cannot be done online directly from the IRCTC website or app, even if your ticket is booked online:

  1. Write Application Form: Write the application on a plain paper addressed to the Chief Reservation Supervisor (CRS) or Station Manager of your nearest railway station. In this, write the PNR number, train number, date of journey, seat number, and complete details of the family member in whose name the ticket is to be transferred.

  2. Attach documents: Attach the printout of the ticket, photocopies of identity card of both the passengers and official proof of relationship (like ration card or Aadhaar) along with the application.

  3. Go to Reservation Counter (CRS Office): Reach the reservation counter (PRS Counter) or CRS office of your nearest main railway station at least 24 hours before the departure of the train.

  4. Verification of Documents: The Railway official will match the proof of relationship and identity cards presented by you.

  5. New Ticket Endorsement: If all checks are found correct, the name and age of the new passenger will be updated by deleting the name of the original passenger in the railway system. After this, the officer will put the official stamp and signature of name change on the ticket and hand over the copy of the amended ticket to you.

With this authorized stamped ticket and his original identity card, the new passenger can travel in the train completely legally by showing the ticket to the TTE without any fear or hassle.
