Railway passengers also carry heavy luggage with them, but do you know that you can carry luggage only up to the prescribed limit in the train. For this, Railways has given information about how much luggage can be carried in which coach. If you carry more luggage than the prescribed limit and are caught, you can be fined heavily.
According to railway rules, a passenger can carry up to 70 kg of luggage for free in AC first class. Whereas in AC 2 tier, luggage up to 50 kg is allowed. Apart from this, luggage up to 40 kg can be carried free in AC 3 tier or chair car. Talking about sleeper class, a passenger can carry up to 40 kg of luggage with his ticket. In second class this limit is 35 kg.
According to Indian Railways, trunks, suitcases and bags with external dimensions of 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm are allowed to be carried as luggage in the passenger compartment. If trunks, suitcases and bags are larger than the specified limit, booking of such items is required and is allowed to be carried in brake van.
Apart from this, the maximum size of carry-on bag, trunk or suitcase should be 55 x 45 cm x 22.5 cm in AC 3 tier and AC chair car. Therefore, passengers are prohibited from carrying many things in the train. These include chemicals, firecrackers, gas cylinders, acids, grease, leather etc. If a passenger is caught traveling with these prohibited items, action can be taken against him under Section 164.
