Sikkim Rain Landslide: Landslide situation persists in Sikkim due to continuous rain. 15 foreign nationals and more than 1200 tourists are trapped in the landslide caused by rain in Mangan district. According to information given by an official on Friday, 9 people have died due to landslides and heavy rains and property has also been damaged on a large scale. Apart from this, road connectivity, electricity, mobile towers have suffered heavy damage in many areas.

1200 local and 15 foreign tourists are stranded

“According to reports, around 1,200 domestic and 15 foreign tourists are stranded due to road blockage caused by heavy rains and landslides. Two tourists from Thailand, three from Nepal, 10 from Bangladesh are stranded,” Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department Principal Secretary CS Rao said at the airport in Lachung in Mangan district.

Chief Minister called a high level meeting

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has called a high-level meeting in Mintokgang to review the situation following the landslides caused by heavy rains. Due to the current landslide situation in Sikkim, local authorities have asked stranded tourists to move out and avoid taking risks. There is adequate ration for the stranded travellers.

Apart from this, the Chief Minister said that the Chief Secretary's Office has started discussions with the Center to bring all the tourists by air depending on the weather conditions. Tourists will also be evacuated by road if required and the department is working to rescue the stranded people in coordination with local tourism stakeholders in Mangan as well as the district administration, police and tourism officials.

Prem Singh Tamang assured all possible help to the tourists in this natural disaster. At present, all parts of Sikkim except Lachung are open and safe for travel.

Many houses were submerged

Heavy rains have caused landslides in the district, blocking roads and submerging many houses, as well as damaging electric poles. A large number of tourists are also stranded.
