Shimla, 3 October (Hindustan Reporter). State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTA) organized an awareness program related to organ donation on Thursday at Theog College in Shimla district. IEC Consultant Rameshwari of SOTA informed the students about the “need of organ donation in the society” through a PowerPoint presentation.
He said that organ donation can be done in both living and dead circumstances. In organ donation while alive, a person can donate a part of kidney, pancreas and liver to a close relative. In a brain dead situation, a person can save the lives of needy patients by donating his eight organs. He told that the condition of brain dead is completely different from coma, in this the body is working through the ventilator and the brain is completely dead. He said that by the year 2023, about 1037 people have donated organs across the country, whereas every year dozens of people become brain dead due to different accidents, who are capable of donating organs.
He told that every year 2 lakh patients need kidneys while only 10 thousand are transplanted. Every year in the country, 30 thousand people require liver whereas only 2 thousand are transplanted. Apart from this, every year 10 lakh people need eyes but only 50 thousand eyes are transplanted. This is happening due to lack of awareness about organ donation and eye donation in the country. He said that people of any caste, religion, community, gender and age can donate organs. Due to confusion about the correct information related to organ donation, most of the people shy away from organ donation. That is why if people have sufficient information about organ donation in advance, only then such opportunities can prove to be a boon for the needy.
