Today is a big day for Nepali PM Prachanda, who will win trust vote in the House of Representatives

Days after quitting the Nepali Congress to form a new alliance with the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML), Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda will win a vote of confidence in Parliament on Wednesday. Prachanda, a former guerrilla leader associated with the Communist Party of Nepal and leader of the third largest party in the House of Representatives, wrote a letter to the Parliament Secretariat on Sunday. In his letter, Prachanda said that he has severed ties with Nepali Congress.

PM Prachanda will have to get a vote of confidence

As per the provisions of the Constitution, the Prime Minister is required to receive a vote of confidence after withdrawing support from the coalition government. After losing the support of former ally Nepali Congress, Prachanda will now have to prove his majority. Prachanda has formed a new alliance with the Nepal Communist Party led by former PM KP Oli.

Prachanda's new coalition government needs at least 138 votes in the 275-member assembly to prove majority. After assuming the post of Prime Minister in December 2022, Prachanda will prove the trust vote for the third time. The Prachanda-led government has the support of 150 members in the lower house.

Let us tell you that CPN-UML, the country's second largest party led by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has 75 seats. While the third largest party CPN-Maoist has 32 seats. Apart from this, Rashtriya Swatantra Party has 20 seats, Janata Samajwadi Party has 12 seats and CPN-Unified Socialist Party has 10 seats.
