Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday spoke candidly on India's relations with Pakistan. Speaking at the launch of Ambassador Rajiv Sikri's book Strategic Conundrums: Reshaping India's Foreign Policy, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the era of dialogue with Pakistan is over.
He said, “I think the era of dialogue with Pakistan is over.” Every action has consequences and as far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, I think Article 370 is over and so the issue today is what kind of relationship can we consider with Pakistan? The Foreign Minister further said that Rajiv has said in his book that perhaps the Indian government is satisfied with maintaining the current level of relations. Maybe yes.. maybe no… but we are not passive. And we will react to developments, whether positive or negative. Jaishankar said that as far as Afghanistan is concerned, the relationship with the people there is strong. There is definitely goodwill towards India at the social level. But when we look at Afghanistan, I think we should not forget the basics of governance. International relations work here.
Bangladesh's transformation could be disruptive
Talking about Bangladesh, the External Affairs Minister said that India has to find a basis of mutual interest with Bangladesh and India will work with the current government. There have been ups and downs in our relations since the independence of Bangladesh and it is natural that we will deal with the government of the day. But we have to recognise that political change is taking place and it can be disruptive, and clearly we have to look at the mutuality of interests here.
