Mumbai: With Diwali coming to an end last week, the month-long festive season is said to have generated business worth around Rs 1 lakh crore through the country's e-commerce platforms. According to the report of a research firm, there has been a twenty percent increase in sales in the current year as compared to last year's Dussehra-Diwali festivals.
Apart from urban areas, consumers in non-urban areas have increased purchasing through e-commerce platforms.
During the festivals of Ganpati followed by Dussehra and Diwali in September, e-commerce platforms operating in the country saw a flood of promotional offers to boost sales.
During the festive period, 65 percent of total smartphone sales in the country were online. Apart from this, an increase was also seen in the sales of clothes, beauty products, home appliances etc.
The increase in online sales has also seen a rise in payments through Unified Payment Interface (UPI). Since UPI was launched in April, 2016, a record total of 16.58 billion transactions worth Rs 23.50 trillion were completed through UPI for the first time in October this year.
After the festive season, the wedding season in November-December is expected to generate offline retail business worth Rs 6 lakh crore. About 48 lakh marriages are expected to take place in the country in these two months.
