In the history of Indian cricket, whenever there will be talk of big matches, pressure situations and making India world champion, then the name of one player will be written in golden letters – Gautam Gambhir. Former India’s legendary opening batsman, combative cricketer and currently the head coach of Team India, Gautam Gambhir is celebrating his birthday today. Cricket fans, former players and young fans from all over the world are wishing Gambhir a very happy birthday. Whenever Gautam Gambhir’s name is taken, his fighting innings of 75 runs in the 2007 T20 World Cup final and that memorable inning of 97 runs in the 2011 ODI World Cup final flash in the mind of every Indian fan. However, Gambhir’s career has not been limited to just these two innings, but there have been many more such incredible innings from his bat, which have brought India out of the clutches of defeat and placed it on the threshold of victory.
Gautam Gambhir is not called the real ‘troubleshooter’ of Indian cricket for nothing. The second Test match played against New Zealand at Napier ground in 2009 is the biggest proof of this. In this match, India was in great danger of defeat and Team India had to bat for two consecutive days to avoid innings defeat. At that time, Gautam Gambhir presented such a display of his technical proficiency, amazing patience and fighting spirit which will always be remembered in the history of cricket. Gambhir batted for about 643 minutes i.e. about 11 hours and played a historic inning of 137 runs facing 436 balls. It was only on the basis of this courageous century of Gambhir that India drew that test match and later was successful in winning the historic test series.
Apart from the World Cup, Gautam Gambhir has played many such match-winning innings in One Day International (ODI) cricket, which cricket lovers still remember with great fondness. In the year 2008, during the CB Series played on Australian soil, Gambhir had played a very aggressive century of 113 runs while destroying the Kangaroo bowlers on the Sydney ground, which played an important role in India winning the triangular series for the first time in Australia. Also, who can forget Gambhir’s explosive innings of 150 not out while chasing the target in Jaipur ODI against Sri Lanka in the year 2010. In that match, Gambhir single-handedly destroyed the Sri Lankan attack and gave India a one-sided and big victory.
Apart from leaving an indelible mark as a cricketer, Gautam Gambhir also proved his mettle as a successful and courageous captain. Taking charge of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gambhir made the team IPL champion twice under his captaincy in 2012 and 2014. As a captain, he always led the team from the front and whenever the team was in trouble, he opened the door himself and scored many brilliant half-centuries. Even after retiring from cricket, Gambhir’s fearless and aggressive style did not diminish. First as a mentor and now as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, he is instilling in the young players the same fighting spirit and passion to win, which was always visible on the field in his own game.
