New Delhi. North and Central India are currently in the grip of severe heat. The situation is such that reports of deaths due to heat wave have also started coming in. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a good news to the people. It was told that this year the country is likely to have above average monsoon. IMD said, “From a statistical point of view, the seasonal rainfall due to the southwest monsoon over the entire country is likely to be 106% of the long period average (LPA) with a model error of ± 4 percent.”

The Meteorological Department said, “This year, the country's monsoon season, which runs from June to September, is expected to receive above normal rainfall.” The IMD said that the monsoon will be above normal in the central and southern parts of India. The north-eastern part of India will receive below normal rainfall. Also, below normal rainfall is expected in north-west India. It was told that the monsoon may start in Kerala in the next 5 days. The conditions are absolutely favorable for this.

Last year, there was less rain

Last year, India received 94 per cent of its total rainfall during the monsoon season. More than 70 per cent of the total rainfall in India is received during the southwest monsoon. The onset of monsoon in Kerala marks the onset of the southwest monsoon in India. It is an important indicator that marks the transition from the hot and dry season to the rainy season.

The heat will be even more troublesome in June!

The IMD has clarified that the temperature is likely to be above normal in June. The IMD has predicted a higher number of heatwave days in June over northwest India and adjoining parts of the central region. The IMD has said, “More than normal hot days are likely over most parts of northwest India and neighbouring areas of north central India during June 2023.”
