Marriage Bill abolished: With the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, the bill introduced in the House to bring equality in the marriage age of boys and girls has lapsed. The Prevention of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill 2021 was introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2021 and referred to the Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports.
The time of the Standing Committee was extended several times
Citing provisions of the law and the Constitution, former Lok Sabha secretary general and constitutional expert PDT Acharya told PTI that with the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, “the Bill has lapsed.”
The aim of this bill was to amend the Child Marriage Prevention Act, 2006 to make the minimum age of marriage for girls 21 years.
Under the 2006 Act, a person who married before the minimum age can apply for annulment of marriage within two years of attaining the maximum age (i.e. before attaining the age of 20 years).
Asaduddin Owaisi had given the argument, let us tell you that
AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi had opposed the central government's bill. Owaisi had said, “A 19-year-old girl or boy can choose their profession, can contest elections for parliament, can start a business, can have consensual sex, can live in a live-in relationship but cannot choose their life partner. This is beyond comprehension.”
What did SP leader Abu Azmi say?
SP leader Abu Azmi said that we have been hearing here that when someone dies in the family, it is said that the last rites should be performed immediately. Similarly, when a daughter grows up, she should be married. But now a girl will not be able to get married even at the age of 18. She cannot understand what this means. But she will become mature at the age of 21.
