This rule will be brought back in IPL for MS Dhoni: There has been no official information from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about what the retention rules will be for the mega auction for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. But it is believed that the BCCI may reinstate an old rule on the request of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which will help Chennai Super Kings retain former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the team.

What are the rules?

Actually, this rule was first made by the BCCI in the IPL that a player who has retired from international cricket for more than five years will be included in the auction as an uncapped player. This rule was in force from the beginning of the IPL till the year 2021. Later it was canceled. Now according to a report, the BCCI held a meeting with the IPL franchise owners on July 31, in which Chennai Super Kings raised the issue and requested to reinstate the rule. According to reports, Chennai Super Kings' request has not received much support from other franchises, but the BCCI is in favor of bringing back this rule. If the rule is restored, Chennai Super Kings can retain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as an uncapped player.

The ball is not in our court yet

Former Indian team captain MS Dhoni recently said at an event in Hyderabad, 'The future of my IPL career will depend on the retention rule for the next season's auction. There is still a lot of time for this. What decision do they take regarding retaining the players? The ball is not in our court right now. So I will take a decision after the rules are formally announced, but it should be in the best interest of the team.'
