Aoshima Island: There are many countries around the world that are known for their tourism, technology and clean environment. But there is one country that is known for its cats. We are talking about an island in Japan where there used to be more cats than humans.

There is an island in Japan that is known throughout the world for its cats. There are more cats here than humans. Aoshima Island in Japan, also known as Cat Island, is a small fishing island off the coast of Ehime Prefecture, which is home to more than 120 cats.

According to the information, before the 2000s, Aoshima was a deserted place, at that time more than 20 people lived there, but after getting information about Aoshima on the internet, cat lovers from all over the world started coming here as tourists.

Ōshima Island

Despite the small population, Aoshima's cats live freely there. Cat Island is visited by many tourists. In 2019, it was reported that only six people still lived permanently on the island, but by the mid-1940s, about 900 people had made the island their home.

Why are there so many cats on the island?

Before the cat population grew on Aoshima, the island had a huge rat problem. Villagers raised silkworms to make silk for their fishing nets. Silkworms attract rats, so cats were brought in to solve this problem. But then the rats died out and the cat population increased.

Only 34 tourists can visit this island

The government does not allow many tourists to visit here at once. Only 34 tourists are allowed to visit Oshima each day. Visitors can also bring food for the cats.

According to information, more than 20 people still live on this island. However, the number of cats here is said to be around 200. In such a situation, it is called the island of cats.

Donate to provide food for cats

In Japan, people also contribute to providing food for cats through donations. Apart from this, cats also get food from sea fish. Apart from this, cats are being sterilized for many years to control the population. In simple words, cats rule this island.
