55 billion but incomplete…
The Ryugyong Hotel, also known as the Haunted Hotel, cost approximately ¥55 billion to build, which was two percent of North Korea’s GDP at the time. This hotel was supposed to be the tallest hotel in the world, but it never happened and due to its dilapidated condition it got a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Had the hotel been completed on time, it would have been the seventh tallest building and tallest hotel in the world.
Construction of the hotel began in 1987.
Construction of the hotel began in 1987, and was expected to be completed within two years. However, several problems were encountered during construction, including shortage of building materials and technical difficulties associated with construction. Due to these reasons the construction work was often halted. Then in the year 1992, due to the poor economic condition of North Korea, construction stopped completely. However, construction work resumed in the year 2008. About 11 billion rupees were spent in arranging this huge building. Later, glass panels were installed in the building and other minor works were completed, but the hotel was still not fully functional.
Ryugyong Hotel is still incomplete
In 2012, the North Korean government claimed to soon complete the construction of the Ryugyong Hotel. However, despite repeated changes in dates, the hotel remains incomplete to this day. Due to ongoing problems in the construction work, this project has not been completed yet. Despite its vastness and pyramidal shape, this hotel remains a mysterious and incomplete building to the world.
