News India Live, Digital Desk: Many people thought it was a joke, while others called it Trump’s boastfulness. The Danish Prime Minister had even called it ‘absurd’, on which Trump was quite angry. But do you know that this desire to buy Greenland is not just a product of Trump’s mind?
The truth is that America has been eyeing this snow-covered island for decades. Come, let us turn the pages of history and know the truth about this ‘real estate deal’.
Bidding was also done in 1946
This may surprise you, but long before Donald Trump, in the year 1946, the then American President Harry Truman Had also tried to buy Greenland.
The Second World War had just ended and America had understood how tremendous the location of Greenland was. Truman told Denmark at that time 100 million dollars gold (Gold) was offered. Imagine how huge this amount was at that time! But Denmark flatly refused.
Not only this, even before that in 1867 the US State Department had considered purchasing both Greenland and Iceland.
What does America want?
Now the question arises that why is America so interested in this icy island?
- Strategic Location: Greenland is a place on the map from where America can easily keep an eye on its enemies (especially Russia and China). America’s ‘Thule Air Base’ is already present here.
- Natural Treasure: There may be reserves of valuable minerals, oil and gas hidden under the ice.
- Capture the Arctic: As global warming is melting the ice, new sea routes are opening up. America wants to strengthen its hold there.
Is this possible?
See, Greenland is not an empty plot or house, it is an autonomous region which comes under Denmark. There are people there, they have their own respect. When Trump again talked about buying it, the people there said, “We are open for business, but we are not for sale.”
So the overall thing is that this ‘desire’ of America is very old, but every time it has to come back after clashing with the ‘self-esteem’ of Denmark. Now, it will be interesting to see whether this issue arises again in Trump’s second term or not.
