This whole incident started on January 31 this year, when an 18-year-old girl from Vidyaranyapura area of Bengaluru suddenly went missing from her house under mysterious circumstances. According to family members, she had left the house that day saying that she was going to college, but when she did not return, the family members lost their sleep. Initial investigation had revealed that she had left with only the main documents related to her identity and a simple college bag. At that time he did not have any mobile phone or other valuables with him, so that his location could be immediately traced. After leaving the house, both of them changed their direction for some time and headed towards Male Mahadeshwara Hills, after which both of them parted ways. The family tried everything possible to search for their daughter, but when no clue was found, they approached the Karnataka High Court in the hope of justice and filed a Habeas Corpus petition, after which the case took a new turn.
Karnataka High Court’s order and CID’s entry
Taking seriously the Habeas Corpus petition filed by the family, the Karnataka High Court ordered an investigation into the matter, after which in the month of April this year, the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took charge of this complex case. Senior CID officials started resorting to digital surveillance and modern technological means along with traditional investigation to get to the bottom of the case. However, in the initial months, investigators were unable to find any concrete leads as the missing girl had no working mobile phone and no direct means of communication. Despite this, the investigation team did not give up and continued to explore every digital link. In this series, in the beginning of this week, the investigators got such a technological breakthrough which changed the picture of the entire case and the secret hidden behind the curtain of fog for seven months started being exposed.
During the investigation, the technical wing of CID got concrete information that the missing girl had recently used her digital identity or any document related to it. During this process, some other mobile number was used in the one-time password i.e. OTP generated. When the investigating agencies closely investigated this technical clue, it was found that the phone number used for that OTP was not someone else’s but the number of the same girl’s husband. Although police officials have not clarified for which specific government or private service this digital or biometric information was used, this clue proved enough to lead the police directly to the place where the young woman was hiding for a long time. Based on this digital clue, the police took immediate action and traced her husband’s location through that mobile number and reached a remote village in Kanakapura taluk.

When the police team reached that rural area of Kanakapura taluk, they too were surprised to see the sight there. The girl who had left her house seven months ago with only her college bag, was living with her husband in that village. Senior CID officials informed the media that when the police found the girl, she was pregnant. The police immediately followed the legal procedures and took him under their protection and produced him before the High Court. After being produced in the court, the girl was handed over safely to her parents after completing the legal formalities. Thus the family, which had been living under the shadow of uncertainty for seven months, finally got a sigh of relief, and their daughter returned back to their fold.
However, another aspect of this case still remains a challenge for the police. Initially, when this girl had left the house, another minor friend was also with her, who has been missing since that time. Police and investigating officers say that the investigation and search operation of this entire case will continue until the safe and sound evidence of the second minor girl is found. The police have also indicated that as soon as any concrete information is received about the second girl, she will also be handed over to her family as per the legal process.
