New Telecom Act: The Telecom Act 2023 is going to come into force from June 26, after which the central government will be able to regulate any telecom service or network in an emergency. The government has partially notified the Act, under which some provisions including sections 1, 2, 10 and 30 will be implemented from June 26.

According to this notification, the provisions of sections 1, 2, 10 to 30, 42 to 44, 47, 50, 58, 61 and 62 of the Act will also come into force from June 26, 2024. Due to this, the government will be able to gain control over telecom services based on public order and security to prevent criminals.

Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act 2023:

-Under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act 2023, which came into force on June 26, the government gets the power to take control of telecom services in an emergency.

-The purpose of this act is to ensure public safety and help in disaster management.

-The Government may temporarily take over the control of telecommunication services and networks from the bodies authorised under this section.

-This ensures communication with the service on priority basis in case of emergency.

-This department will help the government to ensure that vital communication services can function smoothly in case of an emergency.

The implementation of the Telecom Act 2023 will bring many changes to India's telecom environment. The Act will replace the old rules governed by the Indian Telegraph Act 1885, the Wireless Telegraph Act 1933 and the Telegraph Wire Act 1950. The Act will promote telecom services in rural areas and provide significant support to research, development and pilot projects in addition to its existing role. It will prioritize user security by mandating security measures against spam and malicious communications under the law.
