There will be three Chief Justices in the Supreme Court this year

New Delhi: The tenure of Chief Justices of the Supreme Court is usually not very long, the tenure of the previous Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was for two years, he retired in November 2024. In such a situation, this year the Supreme Court will get three Chief Justices.

The country’s current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna will retire on May 13, to be replaced by Justice B. R. Gavi will become the Chief Justice who will retire on November 23. After his retirement, Justice Surya Kant will become the Chief Justice. In this way, there will be three Chief Justices in the Supreme Court in the same year. Not only this, seven judges of the Supreme Court will retire this year. Therefore, other judges will be appointed in their place.

Current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has not even taken the accommodation provided by the government, clarifying that he has taken this decision as the tenure is not very long. Justice V. Ramasubramaniam is going to retire on January 5. His tenure has been for about three years. On January 31, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, Justice Abhay S. Oka will retire on May 24, apart from him, Justice Bela Trivedi, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, Justice BR Gavi, Justice Sanjeev Khanna will also retire this year. Usually the most senior judge is made the Chief Justice.
