Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s sudden announcement of returning to Bangladesh by the end of the year has created a stir in the political circles of Dhaka. Due to this decision of 79-year-old Hasina, there is great uneasiness in the Tariq Rahman led BNP government. According to sources, the government has decided to take immediate strategic steps and remove President Mohammad Shahabuddin from the post. According to sources associated with the President’s Office, the government has asked him to resign by August, however, due to his tenure till 2028, the President has not yet taken a final decision on this.

Why does the BNP government want to remove President Shahabuddin from the post?

Mohammad Shahabuddin is considered very close to Sheikh Hasina, who was appointed to this post in 2023 during the Awami League government. The Rahman government fears that if Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, the President may use his constitutional rights to make a big move legally and politically. Apart from this, the BNP government wants the President, who recently underwent a heart operation in London, to step down on his own citing his ill health, so that any legal dispute can be avoided.

Despite 600 cases and death sentence, Hasina’s tough attitude

Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since the August 2024 coup, has more than 600 criminal cases registered against her in Bangladesh and has also been sentenced to death in dozens of cases. Despite this, she has clarified that her political struggle has not stopped and she will return to Dhaka to strengthen the base of her party Awami League. The fear of this return has given sleepless nights to the present government.
