Shimla, 09 November (HS). Former Chief Minister and former Union Minister Shanta Kumar has expressed concern that the menace of drug addiction is increasing rapidly in Himachal Pradesh and it is bent on ruining the new generation. He said that due to mobile phones and new technology, the new generation is moving away from its values.
Shanta Kumar said in a statement on Saturday that she is satisfied to know that Himachal Police has taken some concrete steps against drug addiction in Shimla and Noorpur. Efforts are being made to confiscate the property of drug smugglers. Property worth crores of rupees of a woman smuggler has been seized in Noorpur. However, he also said that these steps are commendable but not sufficient.
He especially praised Shimla district Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Gandhi during whose tenure drug abuse was curbed in Kangra district also. Shanta Kumar expressed hope that similar active steps should be taken across the state so that the menace of drug addiction can be completely eliminated.
Shanta Kumar said that it is necessary to catch drug users but the real problem is to catch those big people who are doing drug trade on a large scale. Such people have made wealth worth crores illegally. He suggested that the government should change the law if necessary, their properties should be confiscated and illegal constructions should be demolished.
Shanta Kumar warned that if the government does not strictly address this serious problem, the future of the new generation of Himachal Pradesh may be in darkness. He appealed to the government to take serious action on this issue.
