Amidst the chaotic situation in Bangladesh and speculations of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning and leaving the country and going to London, if we consider the statements of British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, then the possibility of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina getting political asylum may be eclipsed. It is known that Sheikh Hasina has reached India from Bangladesh from where there are speculations of her going to London. Hasin is currently at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, India.
Referring to the situation in Bangladesh over the last two weeks, David Lammy has advocated a full and independent investigation led by the United Nations into these incidents and said that Britain wants action to be taken to ensure a peaceful and democratic future for Bangladesh.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said, “The last two weeks in Bangladesh have seen an unprecedented escalation of violence and tragic loss of life and property. A transitional period has been announced by the army chief. All parties now need to work together to end the violence, restore calm, de-escalate the situation and prevent any further loss of life and property. The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the last few weeks. The UK wants action to be taken to ensure Bangladesh has a peaceful and democratic future. The people of the UK and Bangladesh have deep ties and shared Commonwealth values.”
Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said on the situation in Bangladesh and the departure of Hasina and the changing developments in Bangladesh, “We welcome the announcement of the interim government and urge that any changes be made in accordance with the laws of Bangladesh.”
On the current situation in Bangladesh, the US State Department says, our condolences are certainly with those who have been hurt in the violence that has taken place over the past few weeks. We are now focused on ending the violence and supporting accountability. All decisions regarding the interim government must be made in accordance with democratic principles, the rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people.
