There is a need to strengthen the patent system to promote innovation and entrepreneurship – Kumar Raju

Jhansi, April 05 (Hindustan Reporter) A webinar on the topic Intellectual Property Rights was organized by the Institution Innovation Council of Bundelkhand University, Jhansi. Keynote speaker Dr Kumar Raju Controller, Patents & Design RGNNIIPM, Nagpur said that Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are legal rights given to individuals or entities to protect their creations of mind including inventions, literary works, designs and trademarks. In India, the process of filing a patent includes drafting a detailed application, conducting a patent search, filing the application at the Indian Patent Office, examination, publication and final grant of the patent.

Patents play an important role in protecting inventions, providing exclusive rights to inventors, and encouraging innovation. They offer benefits such as market share, monetary gains through licensing or commercialization, and legal protection against infringement. India has taken steps to strengthen its patent regime, including streamlining procedures and enhancing examination procedures, but challenges such as backlogs and enforcement issues still remain.

Efforts are ongoing to improve the patent ecosystem through initiatives such as the National IPR Policy and support for startups and SMEs. In the context of India, he said it has made significant progress in recent years in strengthening its patent regime to align with global standards and promote innovation and entrepreneurship. The Indian Patent Office has streamlined processes, enhanced examination procedures and improved infrastructure to expedite patent grants.

Additionally, initiatives such as the National IPR Policy and Startup India have been launched to support and encourage patent filing among startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). On this occasion, IEC Bundelkhand University President Professor Aparna Raj, Dean Student Welfare Professor Sunil Kabia and Science Faculty Chairman Professor RK Saini also expressed their views.
