Therapy is not for ‘crazy’ people! 5 biggest lies related to mental health

Posts

In our society, if someone has cough or cold, a hundred people advise him to go to the doctor. But if someone says they are sad, stressed, or need to talk to someone, people either ignore them or think of them as ‘weak’.

We have so many fears and misconceptions about mental health and therapy that we are afraid to even ask for help. It’s like trying to win a race with a broken leg.

Today we are going to talk about the 5 biggest lies or myths that mental health experts want to tell us all. These are things that probably should have been told to us in school.

Myth #1: Therapy is only for “crazy” or very sick people

Truth: This is the biggest and most harmful lie. Do you go to the doctor only when you have a heart attack or a mild cold? Similarly, therapy is not just for serious mental illnesses.

It is for everyone who wants to improve their life. It’s for people who want to learn to manage stress, who want to improve their relationships, who want to understand themselves better, or who are going through a difficult period in life. Seeing a therapist is a step toward self-care, not a sign of madness.

Myth #2: Talking to a therapist is like talking to friends. Why waste money?

Fact: Your friend may love you very much, but he may not be your therapist. Why?

Therapists are trained: they not only listen, but also help you make positive changes in your thinking using scientifically proven techniques (e.g. CBT, DBT).
They are fair: A friend will always take your side, which can sometimes prevent you from seeing your mistakes. A therapist helps you from an outside and unbiased perspective.
This is a safe space: you can say anything to your therapist without fear that he or she will judge you or share your feelings with anyone else. This is completely confidential.

Lie #3: Asking for help is a sign of weakness. i should solve my own problems

Fact: Just think, is it better to get your car repaired or take it to a mechanic? Similarly, seeking help from a professional when you are confused is not a sign of weakness, but of strength and courage. It shows how serious you are about your health and that you are willing to take steps to improve it.

Lie #4: The therapist will “fix” me with a magic wand

Truth: The therapist is not a magician, he or she is more like your guide or coach. He can show you the way, give you the right tools, but you have to walk that path yourself. Therapy is a group effort. You also have to work hard and take responsibility for your life. Real change comes from within you.

Lie #5: Once therapy starts, it lasts a lifetime

Fact: This is another lie shown by Bollywood movies. Not every therapy lasts for years. Many therapies are short-term and goal-focused. For a particular problem you may just need 8-10 sessions and you will find your way. It completely depends on your needs.

Just as we exercise to keep our bodies healthy, it is absolutely normal and important to seek therapy to keep our minds healthy.
