Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has announced the new head coach of the Indian team. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir will be the new head coach of Team India. He will replace Rahul Dravid. Dravid's tenure ended with Team India becoming the champion of T20 World Cup 2024.
Gambhir will be the coach of Team India in all three formats. Jay Shah has already said that separate coaches will not be appointed. Gambhir's tenure will be of 3.5 years. BCCI had sought applications in May. After this, two people were tested. Apart from Gambhir, the name of former Indian women's team coach WV Raman was also included in this. However, now Jay Shah has announced Gambhir's name.
Announcing Gambhir's name, Jai Shah said- I am very happy to announce Gambhir's name as the head coach of Team India. I welcome him as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Modern cricket has evolved rapidly and Gautam has seen this changing scene closely. Having faced difficulties throughout his career and excelling in various roles, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to take Indian cricket forward. His clear vision for the team, coupled with his vast experience, makes him fully qualified to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The BCCI fully supports this new journey of Gambhir.
Gambhir's tenure will begin with a white-ball series against Sri Lanka in July. Team India will then play two home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. At the end of the year, India are also scheduled to tour Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and play five Test matches. Then there is the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in 2025, as well as a tour of England in the middle of that year. India and Sri Lanka will jointly host the T20 World Cup in 2026 and the 2027 ODI World Cup is to be played in South Africa.
