Rupnagar: The soul trembles when we remember the dark, violent nights of the blood-soaked martyrdom fortnight of the month of Poh in Sikh history. The land from Sri Anandpur Sahib to the Sarsa River holds an important place in Sikh history as a memorial to the footprints of the Gurus and the sacrifices of martyrs and warriors. Raja Ajmer Chand of Kehlur Bilaspur state attacked Anandpur Sahib several times from 29 August 1700 AD to 16 January 1704 AD. After being repeatedly defeated by these attacks, Ajmer Chand, along with the Baidhar kings and the Mughal army, surrounded Sri Anandpur Sahib from all sides from 3 May 1705 to 4 December 1705 AD.

Ultimately, after a continuous siege of seven months, Guru Gobind Singh took pity on the hill kings and decided to leave Sri Anandpur Sahib thinking of the false oaths they had taken in the letter of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. At this time Guru Sahib divided the monks into four parts. A portion of this Wahir was led by Guru Sahib himself while Bhai Bachitra Singh, Bhai Jeevan and Bhai Uday Singh led the remaining portion of Sri Anandpur Sahib. This Wahir came at a short distance from Sri Kiratpur Sahib when the Pahari and Mughal forces attacked during the night, Bhai Udai Singh at Shahi Tibbi and Bhai Jeevan Singh’s party stopped these forces at a short distance on the Sarsa River. And the army got martyred while fighting. In the morning Guru Sahib along with his family reached Sarsa river. Bhai Bachitar Singh came to Malakpur village and stopped the army coming from Sirhind and Ropar for hours. He was brought inside the fort of Kotla Nihang Khan in an injured condition by Sahibzada Ajit Singh. While crossing the Sarsa River, Guru Sahib lost his mother and got separated from his younger sons Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh. Guru Sahib left for Chamkaur Fort via Kotla Nihang Khan Fort along with Bade Sahibzade Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh.

Via Bhatta Sahib, Bade Sahibzade along with his five companions and 40 lions reached village Brahmin Majra and rested for the night and in the morning after taking bath at Purtan well, Guru Sahib left for Sri Chamkaur Sahib. Similarly, Gurudwara Sri Jangsar Sahib Patshahi VI was constructed in Brahmin Majra village and Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib stayed here while returning to Kiratpur Sahib at the time of Kurkshetra solar eclipse and there was a three-day battle with Pathana in which 500 Sikhs fought. And freed the Pandit’s daughter from the Muslims and to protect the Pandits, Surveer Bahadur Jat Dhanoy of village Ghanduen came here. Came and settled the village. He was named Brahmin Majra.

Sri Chamkaur Sahib

Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji came to Bidhi Chand Kachchi Garhi on the land of Chamkaur with two big Sahibzadas and 40 lions from 7 Poh village Brahmin Majra. The enemy’s army of ten lakhs, whose commander was Nahar Khan, Ghani Khan, Khwaja Mahdood, Khwaja Khizr Khan, the locust army of the kings of Sarhand and Baidhar, surrounded the fort of Chamkaur from all four corners. 8 As soon as Poh’s day broke, a fierce battle broke out on this earth. Guru ji first sent a group of five lions to war, they attained martyrdom by giving death sentence to the girl. In the next batch, Guru ji’s elder son Ajit Singh took the permission of Guru ji and drank Shahidi Jam while cheering the enemy team. After the martyrdom of the great brave, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh told his Guru father that he also wants to fight in the war. Guru ji also prepared his younger son with his own hands and fought a war with the group of lions. Jujhar Singh attained martyrdom while fighting with the enemy. Following the orders of the Guru Panth, on the night of 8th Poh, Bhai Sangat Singh was killed by breaking his skull cap and clapping ‘Hind da Peer Chalya’ and he left for the front.
