Sleep regularity and good sleep are not just about giving rest to the body, but it is also very important for the health of the heart and mind. A recent research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health has revealed that if you do not have the habit of sleeping and waking up at the same time every day, the risk of heart attack and stroke can increase by 26%.
The study was conducted on more than 72,000 participants aged 40 to 79 years. The study found that sleep regularity is a greater predictor of heart disease risk factors, even more so than sleep duration.
What does the research say?
The researchers divided the participants into three groups based on the ‘Sleep Regulation Index’ (SRI):
Poor sleep (SRI >87.3): Lowest risk of heart disease.
People with moderately irregular sleep (SRI 71.6–87.3): The risk increases by 8%.
Whose sleep is more irregular (SRI
Research also shows that just getting enough sleep is not enough. If you do not keep your sleep time regular, the risk of heart diseases does not reduce.
Due to irregular sleep, the body’s 24-hour biological clock (circadian rhythm) becomes unbalanced. This clock regulates not only metabolism but also hormonal activity. Its disturbance can lead to heart attack, stroke, diabetes and even affect mental health.
How to improve?
Experts say that some easy measures can be adopted to maintain the sleep routine, such as
Sleeping and waking up at the same time.
* Reduce screen (mobile, laptop) time before sleeping.
* Eat light food at night and avoid caffeine.
* Keep the sleeping environment quiet and dark.
* Practice reading or meditating before sleeping.
