The most sensational and big political-military news of this time is coming out from the neighboring country Pakistan. Now the elected civilian government of Pakistan has completely lost control over its nuclear weapons. Following a major and historic restructuring of the country’s military structure, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has now become the country’s new ‘superboss’. Under this new change, the remote control and launching button of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb has shifted directly into the hands of the Army and Asim Munir, after which the status of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has been reduced to just a ‘showpiece’.
Formation of National Strategic Command and China’s model
According to reports coming from Islamabad, the Government of Pakistan, taking a major decision, has promoted Lieutenant General Aamir Raza to the post of Four Star General and has appointed him the first commander of the newly formed ‘National Strategic Command’ (NSC). Defense experts say that this entire structure is largely based on the military model of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Under this new Centralized Joint Operation Command, Pakistan’s Army, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force and Strategic Command have been brought together, whose supreme commander is Asim Munir himself.
Real power out of Prime Minister’s hands, limited to information only
Until this new change, Pakistan’s nuclear weapons were traditionally handled by the civilian government-led National Command Authority (NCA), in which the Prime Minister played a key role. But after this new military overhaul, now the role of the Prime Minister has been limited only to receiving information about nuclear decisions and strategies (Information Recipient). Now the final decision on any major strategic or nuclear action will be directly reserved with Asim Munir, who is holding both the posts of Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) and Army Chief.
Even the court cannot challenge Munir’s decision
Interestingly, this new power structure of the army has been given complete legal cover through the constitutional amendments made in the Parliament of Pakistan. Under this new rule, the decision of appointment, re-appointment or extension of the tenure of the Commander of the National Strategic Command cannot be challenged in any court of the country. Due to being out of judicial review, Asim Munir’s power has now become unlimited in Pakistan. This new equation of military dictatorship has not only destroyed democracy within Pakistan, but has also created serious concerns about nuclear security in South Asia and on the global stage.
