The rate of lung cancer is 82% in men and 18% in women, GCRI figures are shocking

World Lung Cancer Day: World Lung Cancer Day is celebrated every year on August 1, day by day the number of patients suffering from lung cancer is increasing all over the world including Gujarat and India. In the last five years, 4660 lung cancer patients have been registered in Ahmedabad's government cancer hospital, GCRI alone.

Lung cancer is more common in men than women

According to the details of these patients, 82% of the patients are men and 18% are women. Thus, the prevalence and risk of lung cancer is four to five times higher in men than women and the biggest reason behind this is addiction to bidi-cigarettes.

In the last five years, 4660 patients were registered in the government cancer hospital

In the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) of Civil Campus, Ahmedabad, 4660 patients of lung cancer have been registered in the last five years i.e. from 2019 to 2023. Out of which 3841 patients are men and 819 patients are women. Thus, the ratio of lung cancer in men is 82.42 percent and in women it is 17.58 percent.

Smoking is the cause in 85 percent of patients

According to the age of the patients, the highest number of patients (19.91%) are between 60 and 65 years of age. However, 50% of the patients are seen between the ages of 40 and 60. GCRI Director Dr. Shashank Pandya said that every year more than 1.99 crore patients are registered for different types of cancers in the world. Out of which more than 2490 lakh are of lung cancer. Every year more than 18 lakh patients die of lung cancer in the world.

Every year more than 81 thousand patients are diagnosed with lung cancer

Talking about India, more than 81 thousand lung cancer patients are registered every year in India and 75 thousand of them die. The main cause of lung cancer in 85 percent of patients is smoking. In the first and second stages, the patient is cured by operation or surgery and treatment including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In just five years, 4990 patients have been registered in GCRI, out of which 3290 are from Gujarat, 689 from Madhya Pradesh and 68 from Uttar Pradesh and the rest are from other states.
