Last Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the all-weather greenfield deep draft major port at Wadhawan in Maharashtra at a cost of Rs 76,220 crore. The port will be counted among the top ten ports in the world when construction is completed.
The Vadhavan Port project will be implemented under a special purpose vehicle formed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board, in which Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board will be 74 per cent and 26 per cent shareholders respectively. The proposed port is 130 km from Mumbai and 150 km from the country's largest container port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The proposed port will have nine container terminals. Each of which will be one thousand meters long. It will have one multi-purpose berth, one coastal berth, four liquid cargo berths, one Ro-Ro berth and one Coast Guard berth. The project cost includes the cost of land, development of core infrastructure, terminals and other commercial infrastructure in public private partnership mode. The Cabinet also approved the establishment of road connectivity between the port and the highway. Integrated with the objectives of PM Gati Shakti, the project will boost economic activities and provide employment to about one million people directly or indirectly.
