The uproar and controversy continued till the last days of the winter session of Parliament. As soon as Lok Sabha proceedings began on the last day of the session on Friday, opposition MPs created a ruckus over the alleged insult to Babasaheb Ambedkar. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla requested MPs to return to their seats and announced that the national anthem would be sung. After the national anthem, the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die.
On the last day of the session, the Lok Sabha passed a proposal to send two bills related to holding simultaneous elections in the country to the Joint Committee of Parliament. On the other hand, the proceedings of Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 12 noon due to the uproar.
Protests and pushback
On the last day of the session, opposition MPs gathered at Vijay Chowk to protest against Home Minister Amit Shah’s alleged “derogatory” remarks. Incidents of pushing and shoving were reported during the demonstration in the Parliament House complex on Thursday. BJP MP Pratap Sarangi alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed him, due to which he got injured. BJP MP Mukesh Rajput was also said to be injured.
After this incident, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla issued strict instructions saying that MPs or political parties cannot protest at any gate of Parliament.
Ruling party and opposition face to face
On Friday, opposition parties took out a march at the Makar Gate of the Parliament House over the remarks of Home Minister Amit Shah. At the same time, BJP demonstrated accusing Congress of insulting Babasaheb Ambedkar. During this, MPs from the ruling party and the opposition came face to face and sloganeering was raised.
BJP alleged that Congress has always insulted Babasaheb and paved the way for him to lose the elections. On the other hand, Congress says that BJP MPs prevented and pushed their president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and women MPs from entering Parliament.
Controversy over Amit Shah’s comment
The center of the controversy is the comment of Home Minister Amit Shah, in which he took a dig at the opposition during the discussion on “75 years of glorious journey of the Constitution of India” in the Rajya Sabha, saying, “Now it has become a fashion – Ambedkar, Ambedkar. …. If you had taken this much name of God, you would have gone to heaven for seven births.”
Congress called Shah’s comment an insult to Babasaheb and also released a video of it. At the same time, BJP hit back by accusing Congress of conspiring to make Ambedkar lose the elections.
The session ended amid uproar and accusations, but it is clear that political tension in Parliament will continue in the times to come.
