Mumbai: While the prices of vegetables have started coming down in the month of Shravan, on the other hand the prices of garlic and ginger have increased. The price of garlic has increased to Rs 400 per kg in the wholesale market of New Mumbai APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee). Similarly, ginger is sold at Rs 100 per kg. In retail, garlic and ginger are sold at one and a half to double the price of the wholesale market.
Due to reduced income and increased demand, the price of garlic has started increasing. Two years ago, the price of garlic was at a low level due to a huge increase in revenue. In such a situation, most of the farmers have stopped harvesting garlic. As a result, the price of garlic has started increasing. Market sources said that the price of garlic will continue to increase throughout the year and people are unlikely to get relief in the price.
Due to reduced production, the price of ginger has also started increasing. Currently, ginger is coming to the market from Navi Mumbai APMC, Satara and Karnataka. Last year, the wholesale price of ginger was Rs 25 to Rs 40 per kg, whereas now it is being sold at Rs 100 per kg.
On the other hand, the price of onion has also started increasing. In Navi Mumbai's Kandabeta market, onion is sold at Rs 35 to Rs 40 per kg, while in the retail markets of the city and suburbs, onion is being sold at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg. APMC receives 100 trucks full of onions every day. It is estimated that as soon as the Shravan month ends next week, the consumption of onion will increase and the prices will also increase.
