After America, China and Russia, India's rail network is considered to be the largest rail network in the world. Along with this, you will also be surprised to know that there is a state in India where there is not even a single railway station. Indian Railways runs more than 23 thousand trains daily and about 3 crore people travel in them. So know when the railway station will start in Sikkim.
When did the first train run?
India's first train started on 16 April 1853 between Bori port and Thane. It was 34 km long. It was started by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway.
The railway network could not reach Sikkim
After nearly 28 years of struggle after independence, Sikkim was declared the 22nd state of India on 26 April 1975. But till now the railway network connecting Sikkim to National Highway-10 has not reached here. The people of the state have to go to Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal to catch the train. In 2024, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of Rangpo, the first railway station in Sikkim. Sikkim can be connected to the train network by 2029.
The railway line was approved in 2022
The railway line project in Sikkim was approved in 2022. A 44.96 km long line is being prepared between Sivok and Rangpo. A 38.65 km long line will pass through the tunnel. Apart from this, 2.25 km line will be on the bridge. Apart from this, 4.70 km part will be in the cutting and filling of the station yard. Railway line 14 will pass through the tunnel between Sivok and Rangpo. The longest tunnel will be 5.30 km while the shortest tunnel will be 538 meters, five stations including Sivok and Rangpo will be built on this railway route. Out of these, 4 stations Sivok, Riyang, Melli and Rangpo will remain open. Teesta Bazaar railway station will be underground.
The train running from Sivok in Bengal to Rangpo will make it easier to reach the capital Gangtok. It is worth noting that one part of Rangpo is in Bengal and the other in Sikkim. The Rangpo river separates the two. The road distance from Rangpo to Gangtok will be 2 hours. This will also help the tourism business in Sikkim.
