New Delhi: This time the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine will be given to American couple Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun. He has been declared for his research in microRNAs. Last year, the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Caitlin Carco and Du Weissmann. He was given this award for research related to nucleoside base research.
He was awarded the prize for his discovery of small pieces of genetic material that change the way genes work at the cellular level. This may open new avenues of cancer treatment.
His groundbreaking research has paved a completely new path in gene control. All cells in our body may have the same genes, but different types of cells work in different ways for muscle and nervous system cells. The reason behind this is genes or gene control. This allows only those genes that are needed to be activated. Ambrose and Ravkun's research on microRNAs has revealed how this control works. Ambrose is currently Professor of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. While Ravkun's research was presented at Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts General Hospital, Ravkun is a professor of genetics at the school.
Announcing the prize at the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, the duo's research was extremely important for discovering how cells grow and work. The two explained that they are interested in identifying the genes that control the timing of various genetic developments, genes that ensure that each type of cell develops at the right time.
