Kargil Vijay Diwas: The world still remembers the example of valor and bravery shown by the Indian Army in 1999. Pakistan will also never forget this day. In this war which lasted from May to July, the Indian Army's 'Operation Vijay' was successful on 26 July. Therefore, this day is also celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas. In such a situation, today on the completion of 25 years of Kargil Vijay Diwas, let us look at a case of how the history makers pushed the Pakistanis back on this day.
Captured Tiger Hill in 1999
Barely four months after joining the Army, young Lieutenant Balwan Singh led a deadly Indian Army platoon in a tactical attack on Pakistani intruders during the Kargil War. Balwan Singh was one of the brave soldiers who captured Tiger Hill on 4 July 1999.
Balwan Singh is now the Colonel of the famous 18th Grenadiers. Recalling that incident, he says that we did not look back from there. Victory was achieved after capturing Tiger Hill. Then while fighting the enemy, I got injured, but still kept fighting. For this bravery, I was awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
Raised in 1976, the 18 Grenadiers played a major role in the war. The battalion has been awarded 52 awards, including one Param Vir Chakra, two Mahavir Chakras, six Vir Chakras, several Sena Medals and Army Staff Commendation Cards.
The final battle began on the night of July 3, 1999
On 26 July 1999, it was announced that the Kargil War was now over. The Indian Army bravely pushed back the Pakistani Army. The Indian Army succeeded in capturing important high places in Ladakh through intelligence. Retired Brigadier Khushal Thakur, who reportedly commanded the battalion during the crucial battles of Tololing and Tiger Hill, says that on the night of July 3, 1999, soldiers of 18 Grenadiers, also known as the Pole Star Battalion, went on a mission to capture Tiger Hill and by the next morning they had achieved the target.
After Tololing, the next target is Tiger Hill
Khushal Thakur was then a Colonel. He said, “On June 12-13, 1999, we captured Tololing and this was a big turning point in this war. This boosted the morale of our armed forces and our countrymen and discouraged the Pakistani side. We captured places one after the other. First we captured the peaks of Batalik sector and the next task was Tiger Hill.”
He said, “For Tiger Hill, I had enough time to reconnoiter. I had artillery guns, multi-barrel rocket launchers and high-altitude combat equipment… Despite all the losses, the morale of 18 Grenadiers was high and our brave men captured Tiger Hill.
