Appearances as Lipowela
21-year-old Nomcebo Zuma and King Mswati III of Eswatini got engaged during a traditional dance ceremony. According to a report published in The Guardian, Nomcebo appeared as Lifovhela in the Reed Dance (traditional dance concert) held on September 2. Lifovhela means 'royal fiancée' in Eswatini. Mswati has become a royal wife for the 16th time.
The Reed Dance is a traditional ceremony that lasts several days and involves women expressing their femininity. Young women wear traditional clothing, with no clothing on the upper part of their bodies, as they dance and sing. Some women also dance with fake swords and shields.
The traditional ceremony, also known as Umhlanga, is considered an example of a “beautiful” culture in Eswatini, The Guardian reports.
The king was fascinated by the dance of the 13th fiancée
This is not the first time King Mswati has announced his underage bride in Umhlanga. King Mswati, a father of dozens of children, chose 17-year-old Findile Nkambule as his 13th fiancée at a reed dance in September 2005. The BBC reported at the time that Findile caught the king's attention during a traditional dance ceremony, just days after the king lifted a ban on having sex with girls under the age of 18 in an effort to fight HIV-AIDS.
According to the BBC, two months after the ban was imposed in 2001, Mswati broke his own rules by making a 17-year-old girl his ninth wife. After which he imposed a fine of one cow on himself. Not only this, in 2003, Mswati made 18-year-old Jena Mahlangu his 10th wife. Jena's mother Lindiwe Dlamini alleged that Jena Mahlangu was kidnapped when she was preparing for the A-level examination. Lindiwe also fought an unsuccessful legal battle to get her daughter back.
