Mumbai: The first meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is being held on June 22 after the formation of the new government at the Center. The last meeting of the Council before the elections was held on 7 October 2023. The meeting on June 22 is being held in New Delhi.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said the June meeting will be the 53rd meeting of the Council and will be chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The meeting is likely to discuss other reforms to bring practicality in GST rates, compliance measures etc. In the meeting held in October last year, the Council had decided to impose 28 percent tax on online gaming, horse racing and casinos. This issue will also be reviewed in this meeting.
Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday that efforts will be made to bring petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) under the ambit of GST. Council sources said that keeping this fact in mind, this issue may come up for discussion in the next meeting of the Council.
While the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha is going on from June 24, it will be interesting to see how the finance ministers of those states where there is no NDA government will discuss before the session.
