PHNOM PENH, December 9 (HS). Cambodia drew 2-2 with Malaysia in the opening football match of the 2024 ASEAN Championship Group A at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on Sunday night.
Malaysia took the lead in the 35th minute through midfielder Stuart Wilkin, but Cambodia equalized in the second half through Abdel Kader Coulibaly. After this, Ty Sa gave Cambodia the lead by scoring the second goal within an hour.
However, Fergus Tierney saved Malaysia from defeat by scoring an equalizing goal in the 74th minute.
Cambodia is ranked 180th in the FIFA rankings, while Malaysia is ranked 132nd.
The 2024 ASEAN Championships will run until January 5, 2025. Cambodia has been drawn in Group A along with Malaysia, Singapore, East Timor and Thailand.
