Crores of people travel by train every day in the country. To make this journey comfortable and convenient, Railways keeps bringing new rules from time to time. In this context, Railways has made such a system which will eliminate all the problems for lower berth i.e. lower seat. Especially, if any elderly person in your house, a woman above 45 years of age or a pregnant woman is travelling, then this news is no less than good news for you.
It often happened that if you forgot to choose a lower berth while booking a ticket, the journey would become difficult. Climbing to the upper berth is not within everyone’s reach. But now you don’t need to worry.
Who will get first priority?
Railways has made it clear that three types of passengers will be given first priority in giving lower berths:
- Senior Citizens: Those who are older and find it difficult to get up and down from the upper seat.
- Women above 45 years of age: Keeping in mind the comfort in long journeys, these have been given priority.
- Pregnant women: For whose safety and comfort the lower berth is most important.
How does this new system work?
Now the booking system of Railways has become so smart that whenever a passenger falling in these three categories books a ticket, the system will automatically give him a lower berth if it is vacant.
And if there is no lower seat vacant at the time of booking, then there is no need to worry. If any lower berth is vacant during the journey, then it is the responsibility of the TTE (Ticket Checker) to give that seat to these needy passengers. This will eliminate the hassle of repeatedly requesting someone to change their seat.
How many seats are reserved in which coach?
According to the Railway Ministry, a certain quota of lower berths is already reserved in every coach for these special categories of passengers:
- Sleeper Class: 6 to 7 lower berths
- Third AC (3AC): 4 to 5 lower berths
- Second AC (2AC): 3 to 4 lower berths
These seats are first given to senior citizens, women aged 45+ and pregnant women at the time of booking.
Disabled passengers have also been taken full care of
Railways have also made special arrangements for disabled passengers and their accompanying assistants:
- A total of 4 seats are reserved for them in sleeper and third AC coaches, which include 2 lower berths, 1 middle and 1 upper berth.
- Even in 2S (second seating) and chair cars, 4 seats are reserved for them.
Now whenever you book a ticket for an elderly or needy member of your family, rest assured. Indian Railways has made complete arrangements for their comfort.
