Jalandhar: Eight months have passed since the election of the President of NRI Sabha Punjab, but till now the executive has not been formed to run the functioning of the council properly. Due to the absence of an executive committee, it is not possible for the Speaker of the Sabha to implement the plans of the Sabha and the problems of the overseas Punjabis. Therefore, the work of the Assembly is being affected, but neither the Assembly management nor the State NRI Affairs Department is paying any attention to this. Due to the absence of an executive committee, NRI Punjabis coming to the office of the NRI Sabha have to return disappointed as the Chairman of the Sabha cannot do much work alone.

It is noteworthy that earlier this year, voting was held on January 5 for the election of the President of NRI Sabha. There was a contest between three candidates for the post of president, including former presidents Jasbir Singh Gill and Kamaljit Singh Hayer, along with Australian NRI Parvinder Kaur Banga. Parvinder Kaur won the presidential election by getting more votes than the opposition candidates. Along with this, she also got the honor of becoming the first woman Speaker in the history of the Legislative Assembly.

The President's tenure lasted only one and a half years

According to the constitution of the House, the tenure of the Speaker is two years. In this way, the tenure of Parvinder Kaur Banga, who became the president on January 5, is only one and a half years left, but the executive has not been formed yet. However, the new Chairman has been actively working for the last 8 months to improve the performance of the Council and establish connect with NRIs. She is working hard to make the platform of the Sabha a bridge between Punjab and the diaspora Punjabis sitting across the world.

Till now President of NRI Sabha Punjab

During 1996, the first Chairman of the INRI Assembly was elected in 1997, with Advocate Prem Singh being elected Chairman, who remained Chairman till 1999. After him, Giani Resham Singh Hare was the president from 2000 to 2002, then Pritam Singh Narangpur was the president from 2002 to 2004 and Giani Resham Singh again became the president from 2006 to 2008. Kamaljit Singh Hayer was elected as the fifth Speaker of the Assembly, who served as the Speaker of the Assembly from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2010 to 2012. He was succeeded by Jasbir Singh Gill who became the 7th Speaker of the Assembly, who was elected in 2013 and his tenure ended on 27 January 2015. Assembly elections were not held after that. Nearly five years later, on March 7, 2020, in the election for the post of President of the Sabha, American NRI Kirpal Singh Sahota became the President. Kripal Singh Sahota was elected President of the Sabha, but during these two years there was no activity in the Sabha and he could not conduct elections for the district units. During his two-year tenure he mostly stayed in America. Sahota's term ended on March 6, 2022, and after an absence of two years, Australia resident Parvinder Kaur Banga became the speaker during the election held on January 5 this year.
