Agreement between Russia and North Korea: Russian President Vladimir Putin, who visited North Korea for the first time in 24 years, has signed a historic agreement with Kim Jong Un. Under this agreement, both countries will provide military assistance to each other in case of war.
“If either North Korea or Russia is invaded, the other country will respond militarily if push comes to shove,” North Korea's official news agency said on Thursday, following a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between its leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang on Wednesday. “In the event of war the other country will provide assistance.”
Tension increased in countries like America and Ukraine
Article 4 of the agreement between the two countries states that if one country is attacked or is in a state of war, the other country will immediately provide military and other assistance. Russian President Putin said that this agreement is of defensive nature. That is, helping to defend another country in case of an attack on one country. This is the most important agreement between Russia and North Korea after the end of the Cold War.
Will North Korea increase its role in the Russia-Ukraine war?
However, it is not yet clear what kind of assistance Russia or North Korea will provide to each other if they are attacked. Will both countries send their armies to fight each other's war or will this help be limited to providing weapons and military equipment. Also, if the war going on in Ukraine escalates, will North Korea also increase its role in it?
Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un described the agreement as a step towards a better transformation of relations between the two countries that will cover all aspects such as security, trade, investment, culture and humanitarian aid.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has also promised full support and cooperation in Putin's war against Ukraine. Kim Jong-Un said that both countries are committed to fighting against the colonial and world-domination mentality of the US and its allies.
America is afraid of this
This agreement between Russia and North Korea has come at a time when the US and its allies have expressed deep concern over North Korea's supply of arms and ammunition to Russia in the Ukraine war. The US also fears that North Korea can rapidly develop its nuclear weapons and missile program with Russia's economic and technical cooperation.
The United States says North Korea provides Moscow with much-needed weapons for its war in Ukraine in exchange for financial aid and technology transfers from Russia, which could increase the threat posed by Kim's nuclear weapons and missile programs.
Russia and North Korea have denied any arms deal, but both countries have advocated strengthening military cooperation.
After their summit, Kim said the two countries have a “deep friendship” and the agreement is the strongest ever, elevating relations to an alliance level.
There were security agreements earlier
North Korea and the former Soviet Union signed a treaty in 1961 that required Moscow to intervene militarily if North Korea attacked. After the collapse of the USSR, the agreement was repealed and replaced by a new one in 2000. Security assistance was weakened in this agreement compared to previous agreements.
South Korean officials said they were still interpreting the summit's results, including what Russia's response might be if North Korea was attacked and whether the new agreement promises to provide the same protections as the 1961 treaty. South Korean officials had no immediate comment on North Korean reports about the agreement's details.
