Mumbai: The Mumbai unit of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a customs superintendent for accepting a bribe of Rs 80,000. This amount was demanded by a Pune-based businessman to clear imported goods ordered from China.

The CBI officer, identified as Kumar Saket, was arrested from his office at International Courier Terminal, Sahas, Andheri on Tuesday. The CBI also conducted searches at Saket's house in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai after he was allegedly caught demanding and accepting bribes.

According to the agency, a Pune-based businessman had ordered a lot of imported goods from China. When the official met Saket to clear his consignment, the official claimed that the goods would attract anti-dumping duty of Rs 2.80 lakh. If he did not want to pay this dumping duty, half the amount would have to be paid as a bribe. He was promised that if he paid this amount, they would clear the consignment without the official duty.

When the businessman expressed his inability to pay the amount of Rs 1.40 lakh, Saket allegedly reduced the amount to Rs 1 lakh. Apart from this, the officer also allegedly gave his mobile number to contact after arranging the bribe amount. The CBI said that based on the businessman's complaint, a trap was laid on Tuesday and the accused took Rs 80,000 from the complainant in his office. During this, the CBI officials caught him red-handed. After this, the accused was formally arrested. Saket was produced in a local court and sent to CBI custody for three days.
