‘The credibility of the United Nations has ended’: India rubbishes the claims of the UN Special Envoy on protests, imposes class

India has once again made its position clear on the international platform and has raised sharp questions on the functioning of the United Nations (UN) and its reports. India has expressed strong objection to the statements and reports given by United Nations Special Envoy Gina Romero regarding youth rights and protests in India. India’s diplomat at the United Nations has rejected a UN report which claimed that youth in India face retaliation for speaking out on issues like mental health or gender justice. India has termed it as propaganda without any solid basis and based on anonymous statements.

Strong reply from Indian diplomat Anuj Swarup in United Nations

First Secretary of India discussing with the Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association during the 81st session of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Anuj Swarup (Anuj Swarup) Presented the country’s side strongly. He termed the report of United Nations Special Envoy Gina Romero as completely baseless, in which concern was expressed about the situation of India’s youth.

Anuj Swarup said in blunt words that the Constitution of India gives every citizen the fundamental right to freedom of speech, expression and peaceful assembly under Article 19. In our country these rights are protected by a completely independent judiciary, a vibrant free press and a strong National Human Rights Commission. Making such fabricated claims against the world’s largest democracy like India raises serious questions on the functioning of UN officials.

‘Report prepared on the basis of anonymous claims and hearsay’

The Indian diplomat made a direct attack on the credibility of the report of Special Rapporteur Gina Romero, saying that this arbitrary method of preparing the report is the main reason due to which the credibility of the United Nations and its various institutions is continuously eroding today. He said that making sweeping allegations against the country with the world’s largest youth population on the basis of statements and footnotes of some unknown people is not acceptable under any circumstances.

Anuj Swarup said, “This report has been prepared only on the basis of hearsay without any factual investigation, which has been given the form of a UN report. Our delegation completely rejects such misleading claims.” He taunted and said that the officer who depends on anonymous information to form an opinion about a country with a population of 1.4 billion, is not doing justice to the dignity of her post.

Gave examples of active youth participation and political movements in India.

The Government of India made strong reference to the civic space available to the youth in the country and their democratic participation. Referring to the recent student protests against the Chief Election Commissioner and irregularities in public examinations, Anuj Swarup explained how the Government of India has always interacted with the youth in a positive and open manner.

Citing the example of sarcastic political movements and the cockroach Janata Party (CJP) delegation, he said that in any other repressive country in the world can such a party of youth ask direct questions to the government, march to the capital and sit and hold talks with senior Union ministers of the country? This is proof that democracy and freedom of expression are completely safe in India. Additionally, the government has engaged more than 50 lakh youth on national priorities through the ‘Develop India Youth Leadership Dialogue’. Finally, India urged the UN Special Rapporteur to thoroughly investigate the facts before defaming any country and to bring seriousness and impartiality in his reporting.
