Supreme Court: Recently, the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the controversial statement given by Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of Allahabad High Court in a program of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The court said, ‘This matter is under consideration. ‘Detailed information has been sought from the High Court.’
Complaint was filed against CJI
Let us tell you here that earlier the Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR) had written a letter to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) complaining about this. The letter demands an internal inquiry into the statement of Allahabad High Court judge Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav. The letter demanded that the justice be suspended from all judicial duties pending the investigation.
What did Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav say?
Many lawyers and VHP workers were also present in the program. Addressing them, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav said, ‘I have no hesitation in saying that this is India. And this country will run according to the wishes of the majority of the people living here. You cannot claim the right to have four wives, Halal or triple talaq. You cannot insult the culture, gods and great leaders of the country. You cannot insult a woman who is considered a goddess in Hindu scriptures and Vedas. What I said is not for any particular religion. This applies to all of us. Every religion itself has to give up all wrong practices. If they do not do so, the country will enforce uniform laws for all its citizens.’
There was an uproar over this statement
In fact, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of Allahabad High Court had gone to address a program organized by the legal cell of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) about the constitutional need for Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Meanwhile, this statement given by him created an uproar.
